While a bad joke, the comment suggests that many in Egypt consider Morocco’s Lions as one of the toughest challenges standing in the way of the Pharaohs’ CAN 2019 aspirations.

By Morocco World News -

Rabat – Ahmed Shobair, a former Egyptian football star who now hosts one of Egypt’s most popular football shows, has made a bad joke about Morocco’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) prospects. The Egyptian said that he wishes Morocco’s Hakim Ziyech had been injured.

Speaking about what to expect from each of the CAN contenders on his “Malaab on” show aired on ON Sport, Shobair asked his guest which Moroccan player would be unavailable for the rest of the season due to a serious injury.

The guest correctly answered the trivia question. He pointed out that Achraf Hakimi, who recently suffered a metatarsal injury, is set to miss the remainder of the season with his German club, Dortmund, as well as his national team heading to Egypt for CAN in the summer.

Shobair commented, however, that he wished Hakim Ziyech had sustained the injury instead of Hakimi.

Revengeful for Real Madrid or worried for Egypt?

Since moving to Ajax in 2016, Ziyech has established himself as an invaluable starter. The 26-year old attacking midfielder feels comfortable in almost all positions demanding creativity and technical ease.

His consistently stellar performances with club and country have won him a good reputation, with many considering him as the creative mastermind of coach Herve Renard’s attack-minded Atlas Lions.

Shobair, however, a diehard Real Madrid fan, is said to be holding grudges against the Moroccan player for his role in the 4-1 home humiliation of the Spanish club during their Champions League second leg with Dutch club Ajax.

Ziyech scored Ajax’s first goal in what many Real Madrid supporters will remember as the team’s most spirit-crushing Champions League defeat in decades.

But the Egyptian’s comments did also carry a significant echo to the upcoming 2019 CAN to be played in Egypt between June 21 and July 19.

Shobair’s comments came in the wake of the CAN 2019 draw.

Morocco has been drawn in the competition’s “group of death,” while Egypt features in a fairly playable Group A along with Congo, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. But the prospects of a Morocco vs. Egypt game remain open for the later stages.

Based on their current FIFA standings, past CAN records, and recent matches, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal, and Algeria are largely considered to be the tournament’s favorites.

Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi market value has tripled since he joined Borussia Dortmund on a loan from Real Madrid.

By Morocco World News -

Rabat – Football website Transfermarkt has reported that Achraf Hakimi’s market value has jumped three times after a successful half-season with Borussia Dortmund.

Transfermarkt, specialized in defining the market value of players, has valued Achraf Hakimi’s at €25 million, after being esteemed at €7.5 million with Real Madrid when he left in July 2018.

When Hakimi played with Real Madrid, he rarely featured in matches. He was deemed surplus to requirement, pushing Real Madrid to loan him to Borussia Dortmund for two years.

According to many football reports, Hakimi does not want to return to Real Madrid to be a substitute again, especially after improving his footballistic skills and guaranteeing a permanent spot as an undoubted starter at his current German club.

With 49 points and 20 matches played, Borussia Dortmund is ranked first in Bundesliga, the top German football league.

Rabat – Real Madrid has officially signed Mohamed Mizzian, 18, as a loan from his club UD Melilla.

The signing came as a surprise because of European champion clubs’ tradition of avoiding activity in the winter transfer window.

FC Barcelona was also interested in the Spanish-Moroccan player. Mizzian caught the eye of Madrid officials during a match between UD Melilla and Real Madrid in Copa del Rey.

Real Madrid will have the option to buy Mizzian’s contract at the end of this season, when his contract with Melilla ends, according to Spanish media.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) summoned Mizzian for a training camp of the Moroccan national under-17 team in February 2016 in Toulouse, France.

Hans-Joachim Watzke said the Bundesliga club will try to land the Morocco international on a permanent deal from Real Madrid but warned: "It will not be easy."

Borussia Dortmund will attempt to secure loanee defender Achraf Hakimi on a permanent deal, according to club CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke.

The 20-year-old is on a two-year loan from Real Madrid and has made eight league appearances in Dortmund's unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season.

Watzke used a speech to his playing staff to welcome Paco Alcácer to the club after activating the option to purchase the Spain striker from Barcelona outright and stated his intent to follow up the deal with another one for Hakimi.

"Dear Paco Alcácer, welcome to Borussia Dortmund," said Watzke, who was speaking at the club's annual assembly.

"And Achraf Hakimi - we will try to do the same thing with you, even though it will not be easy."

Hakimi made nine league appearances for Madrid in 2017-18, scoring twice for the club then coached by Zinedine Zidane.

Since then, Julen Lopetegui's ill-fated spell in charge of Los Blancos has come and gone, and it is unclear whether his successor Santiago Solari will include Hakimi in his plans.

Morocco international Hakimi has made the left-back spot his own this season, limiting Raphael Guerreiro's opportunities in the first-team.
